Leitner Samsung Lithium-ion Battery Safety Care
“ Are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries safe on my ebike?”
This is a common and frequently asked question by our customers. To help you ride with confidence, we've put together a straightforward and handy guide on how to safely handle and maintain your eBike battery.
Introduction to Lithium-ion removable battery
Lithium-ion battery technology is a widely used energy storage solution known for its high energy density, lightweight design, and long cycle life. Rechargeable batteries power a range of modern devices, like smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, and renewable energy systems. Compared to older battery types, lithium-ion batteries charge faster, last longer, and provide consistent performance. However, they must be stored with care, charged with care, and ridden with care, as improper use can lead to overheating, even fire risks. Further continued advanced technologies are making them more efficient and safer.
Why does Leitner choose Samsung and LG Battery cells?
In the past 12 years, Leitner has selected Samsung Battery Cell or LG Battery Cell for our Battery solution to provide the best battery options to our customers.
Samsung and LG battery cells are high-performance lithium-ion cells known for
- Outputed stabale voltage to prerform consistently
- built in safety layers to lower safety risks
- Reached 96%-99% of its rated capacity after the first full charge
- Provided a high percentage of long life cycle of battery for ebike.
Lithium-ion battery safety regulations in Australia
Australia's lithium-ion battery safety regulations encompass national guidelines and state-specific measures to address fire and safety risks. New South Wales has implemented mandatory safety standards for e-mobility devices, effective from August 2025, to reduce fire risks associated with these products. These combined efforts aim to enhance consumer safety and ensure the safe use of lithium-ion batteries in Australia.
Is the Leitner battery certified to the regulatory requirement 2025?
Yes, Leitner battery pack with Samsung Battery Cells certified to IEC 62133-2:2017+A1:2021, meets NSW mandatory safety standards 2025, under the NSW Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) ACT 2017. The battery certificate is accredited by JASANZ to ISO/IEC.

Battery Maintenance
How to Maximise Battery Life
- At least top up the battery once every 30 days
- Use partial charges rather than full discharges
- Always store the battery in clean, cool and dry envirmnment
- Only charge with the official Leitner charger
- Remove the battery from the ebike
Avoid
- Charging in direct sunlight or hot weather, or any flammable materials
- Storing the ebike in direct sunlight
- Using other branded or third-party chargers
- Dropping, puncturing, or damaging the battery
How far would you like to go on one trip?
- Short trips, 20 km up to 50 km: Choose the 10Ah battery.
- Longer trips, 30 km up to 75 km: choose the 15Ah battery.
- Very long trips: 40 km to 100 km: choose the 20Ah battery.
- Spare batteries can be purchased to extend the range.
How far can you go on one full battery charge?
The range depends on many factors, including the weight of the rider and luggage, how much the rider pedals, hills, pedal assistance level used, and maintenance of the bike, like tire pressure and brake clearance. Therefore, it is only possible to give estimates of the range.
A 250W, 36V 10Ah battery bike has a typical range between 20 km to 50km; a 36V 15Ah battery has a typical range between 32 to 80km. This can be less or more, depending on the individual circumstances.
How long does it take to charge the electric bike battery?
A full charge could take about 5 hours, but if you have only used the battery for a short time, it will take less.
Can I remove the battery from the bike?
Venice, Berlin, Tirol, Libelle, Milan, CrossX: Yes, you can remove the battery for your convenience within seconds using your key to unlock it from the frame. It slides out and the seat is especially designed to flip up using a quick release mechanism to make space for the battery removal. Please note you need the key in order to remove the battery as it is safely locked into the frame with a security bolt to prevent theft.
SuperT model: simply loosen the quick-release of the seat and twist the seat to remove the battery.
Aria: Yes, you can remove the battery. It is located inside the seat post. You can remove the seat post in seconds.
Ultimate models: the battery is located inside the down tube of the frame. It can be removed and replaced, however it is NOT recommended to regularly remove and install batteries to avoid damage to internal wiring.
Riviera, Santorini and Marbeya: Yes, you can remove the battery within seconds using your key to unlock it from the frame.
What does it cost to run an electric bicycle?
Each full charge of a 10ah 36V battery costs about 10 cents in electricity. If you have used the battery only for a short time, it will cost less.
Does the battery need to be empty before I can recharge it?
No. We use high-quality Lithium batteries, which can be charged at any time. For best battery life, keep it topped up and recharge it at least once a month. It is recommended to charge the battery after each trip.
What is the battery life?
Our batteries are rated at 500 full charges if following the battery maintenance standard. That means if you fully discharge 150 times per year, it will last for about 3 years. Don’t expect to have to replace the battery anytime soon.
However, should the need arise, we do have replacement batteries in stock, prices ($395 for 10ah standard battery price subject to change).

Environmental & Safety Precautions
To clean your Leitner battery, lightly wipe it with a damp cloth—never hosing it, spraying directly, or soaking it in water. Never expose the charging terminals to moisture. Pay attention to the environment: cold can reduce riding range, and heat can impair battery performance. Although Leitner batteries are resistant to water, never immerse or soak. For protection from fire, charge on a flat surface that will not burn, and do not place the battery in the vicinity of curtains, paper, or other burning objects. Check for swelling, heat, or leakage before each use and stop using the battery at once in case of damage.
Battery Disposal
At the point of your E-Bike battery's expiration, it must be disposed of responsibly. As rechargeable E-Bike batteries constitute industrial batteries, they must never be placed in household waste bins or standard battery collection centres. Instead, take used or broken-down batteries to a certified e-waste recycling centre, a licensed bicycle shop, or a professional battery store. Some of them accept free batteries and ensure that they are disposed of in the right manner in compliance with environmental guidelines.
With built-in safety features, certified replacement parts, and easy-maintaining bikes, your Leitner battery is set to deliver efficiency and reliability for many years to come. With a few easy habits like partial charging and storage safety, your travels will be as smooth and stress-free as they ever were !
