Road-Legal Motor Power Limits and Speed Limit
Australian law permits electric bikes on public roads if they meet specific motor power and speed criteria:
250W Motor eBike: Leitner e-bikes with a 250-watt motor are road legal across all Australian states and territories.
These models include: Leitner Santorini, Leitner Marbeya, Leitner Riviera, Leitner Ultimate step-over, Ultimate step-thru,Ultimate mid-step, Leitner Venice Cruiser, Leitner CrossX, Leitner Milian Cruiser, Leitner Berlin Cruiser, Leitner Libelle, Leitner Super-T, Leitner Tirol and Leitner Aria. These models comply with the national standard for pedal-assist e-bikes, which requires:
- Motor assistance only while pedalling
- Top speed at 25 km/h
- No license or registration required
500W Motor eBike: Leitner’s Fat Bike features a 500-watt motor, which is road legal in New South Wales only. In other states, the electric bike must be used off-road or on private property.
Are Leitner e-bikes compliant with Australian safety standards?
As part of the latest regulatory update, E-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards, self-balancing scooters and the lithium-ion batteries used to power these devices are now ‘declared electrical articles’ under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act.
This means that these products need to comply with the prescribed mandatory safety standards before they can be sold in Australia.
From May 2025, the product safety standards for lithium-ion e-micromobility devices have been updated and are available on the NSW Government Gazette website.
Here is the chart of our E-bikes that have passed the E-micromobility supplier requirements. All the certificates are valid via JASANZ Database.
The other states are considering adopting similar safety standards in the future. Leitner E-Bikes is proud to be one of the earliest companies in Australia to receive official certification of approval from a recognized safety authority.
